The quote in this drawing comes from a very interesting Soviet Russian book titled “Scientific Siberia.” I found it in a stack of unwanted books being given away by the UNO Library. The book appears to be from the early 70’s, and is basically a propaganda piece for the Soviet science program in Siberia. It is a long, narrow hardcover book, and every page has photos with captions in Russian, along with awkward English translations underneath them. The two characters in this drawing are based on a photograph in another book that I found along with the first one, titled “After the Earthquake, Towards Reconstruction.” It is a hardcover book, consisting almost entirely of photos, many arial, that show the reconstruction effort after the devastating 1980 earthquake in central Italy. I’ve taken the quote and the people out of their context and put them together in the drawing to create new possible meanings for both.
